Film of Southmont School by Walter "Pat" Suppes, 1945

The community's first school, at Hochstein School on lower State Street, started in 1902. It graduated five eighth-grade students in 1908 who then finished their schooling at Johnstown High School. In 1913 a two-room school was opened in what is now the Southmont Municipal Building.

Old Southmont School Building

When the Southmont School was opened for the 1925-26 term it contained ten grades. The first senior class was graduated in the spring of 1927. The last class to graduate from the high school was in 1958-59; the school building was later reused for apartments and offices. Because of the small size of Southmont High School, students played multiple sports and participated as majorettes and cheer leaders.
