Suburban development around the City of Johnstown began after the 1889 Johnstown Flood. After the completion of the Inclined Plane in 1891, Westmont grew steadily. Southmont Borough is one of the later suburbs, incorporated on June 2, 1919. It had a population of 300 people in 1919 and today has a population of nearly 2,200.
